While his friends seek refuge in political activism, environmentalism, religion, romance, and psychoanalysis, the disaffected Charles finds the modern world increasingly impossible to inhabit. Confronted by ecological devastation, political inertia, and the apparent bankruptcy of every institution around him, he drifts toward an increasingly absolute rejection of life itself. Put simply, this is Apocalypse Bresson, the beginning of the End. Bresson’s world crumbles under the weight of modernity, the folly of man despoiling the land as much as polluting the human soul. Remaining true to form, he captures the laments and failings of post-’68 youth through the ever-present 50mm lens, but the spaces between objects and actors are now stifling, gasping for breath in a muted palette of rust and gray. Charles’ fate is revealed from the outset, forcing us to dwell on his all-consuming nihilism as a product of perceived powerlessness in the face of ecological catastrophe, institutional paralysis, and a civilization seemingly determined to destroy itself.
