 to form\, he captures the laments and failings of post-'68 youth through t
 he ever-present 50mm lens\, but the spaces between objects and actors are 
 now stifling\, gasping for breath in a muted palette of rust and gray. Cha
 rles' fate is revealed from the outset\, forcing us to dwell on his all-co
 nsuming nihilism as a product of perceived powerlessness in the face of ec
 ological catastrophe\, institutional paralysis\, and a civilization seemin
 gly determined to destroy itself. As tragic as Mouchette and anticipating 
 the pitilessness of L'Argent\, The Devil\, Probably is among Bresson's mos
