Everything changes with the arrival of a traveling circus and its extraordinary feline attraction: a cat whose oversized sunglasses conceal a miraculous gift. Whenever the glasses are removed, every inhabitant’s hidden nature is revealed through vivid bursts of color. Lovers glow red, the deceitful turn purple, betrayers yellow, and opportunists shift like chameleons. As the town’s carefully maintained facades collapse, long-suppressed desires, hypocrisies, and abuses of power erupt into the open, transforming a playful fantasy into a sharp satire of social conformity and institutional authority. Long suppressed in its native Czechoslovakia for its anti-authoritarian undercurrents, The Cassandra Cat is one of the great overlooked gems of the Czech New Wave. Jasn? fuses fairy tale, political allegory, and exuberant visual invention into a work that celebrates imagination as an act of resistance against the deadening forces of bureaucracy and ideological control. Its ingenious color effects are more than charming gimmicks: they externalize moral character itself, exposing the masks people wear while affirming the liberating honesty and creativity embodied by the film’s children, storytellers, and artists.
