Housewife Seon-hee (Kim Young-ae) sees her routine, middle-class life upended by the arrival of Mi-ok (Lee Ki-seon), a young woman recently orphaned in a house fire. At her husband’s suggestion, Seon-hee welcomes Mi-ok into their home as a housekeeper. But it’s not long before she begins to suspect her husband and their new guest are having an affair. When Seon-hee discovers that Mi-ok owns a mysterious wooden doll–the same one haunting her dreams–she spirals into paranoia, jealousy, and violence, as her once-stable reality collapses into a waking nightmare. Directed with audacious visual flair by Ko Young-nam, one of South Korea’s most prolific filmmakers, the film channels the psychological intrigue and erotic charge of compatriot Kim Ki-young’s renowned 1960 classic THE HOUSEMAID, while drawing on the visual panache of Italian Horror from the ’60s and ’70s. At the same time, it cleverly recontextualizes familiar horror tropes through South Korean culture and tradition, filtered through a subversive sociopolitical lens. Made at a time when South Korea was still under military dictatorship and film censorship was only beginning to loosen, SUDDENLY IN THE DARK boldly defied the limits of South Korean genre cinema.
