 and's suggestion\, Seon-hee welcomes Mi-ok into their home as a housekeepe
 r. But it's not long before she begins to suspect her husband and their ne
 w guest are having an affair. When Seon-hee discovers that Mi-ok owns a my
 sterious wooden doll--the same one haunting her dreams--she spirals into p
 aranoia\, jealousy\, and violence\, as her once-stable reality collapses i
 nto a waking nightmare. Directed with audacious visual flair by Ko Young-n
 am\, one of South Korea's most prolific filmmakers\, the film channels the
  psychological intrigue and erotic charge of compatriot Kim Ki-young's ren
 owned 1960 classic THE HOUSEMAID\, while drawing on the visual panache of 
 Italian Horror from the '60s and '70s. At the same time\, it cleverly reco
 ntextualizes familiar horror tropes through South Korean culture and tradi
 tion\, filtered through a subversive sociopolitical lens. Made at a time w
 hen South Korea was still under military dictatorship and film censorship 
 was only beginning to loosen\, SUDDENLY IN THE DARK boldly defied the limi
 ts of South Korean genre cinema. Its legacy reverberates throughout the mo
