This holiday season, we proudly present Allen Baron’s nihilistic, no-budget knockout, BLAST OF SILENCE. Starring its own writer-director in the lead role, BLAST OF SILENCE follows Frankie Bono (Allen Baron), a hitman for the Cleveland Mafia, who returns to his hometown of New York City during Christmastime to complete a risky contract killing. Needing to bide his time before he makes a move, Frankie wanders the streets of New York, where he runs into an old friend and must contend with a past he’d rather forget. Working on a shoestring budget with minimal resources, Baron turned his limitations to exquisite advantage. With stark black-and-white photography, energetic editing, and a jazz score by Meyer Kupferman, he crafts a rough-hewn yet compelling portrait of the grime, decay, and despair festering beneath New York’s holiday bustle. The scenes of Baron skulking through Rockefeller Plaza, with his morose hitman’s demeanor contrasted starkly with the cherubic tones of a children’s choir singing carols, suggest on-the-fly documentary interpolations that present a raw portrait of a seedy, unvarnished New York. But it’s the bile-filled second-person narration, menacing and corrosive, that immerses us in Frank’s headspace of hatred and abjection, solidifying BLAST OF SILENCE as a powerful and essential portrait of alienation and a classic of existentialist genre cinema. Tickets: per person. Showtime: 7:30pm. Doors open 30 minutes before showtime. Tickets are available at thegaptheatre.com and at the door.
