 rd mobility\, pre-med student Sid Lucero (Mark Gil) pledges to Alpha Kappa
  Omega\, one of his school's most prominent fraternities. Over a protracte
 d initiation period\, Sid and his fellow pledges find themselves subjected
  to increasingly grueling and sadistic hazing rituals that blur into genui
 ne danger. As Sid endures an escalating series of psychological and physic
 al humiliations\, coercion\, and torture\, and social pressure to obedient
 ly submit\, Alpha Kappa Omega's guise of brotherhood and community begins 
 to resemble something more akin to a fascistic cult. Partly inspired by a 
 series of fraternity hazing incidents in the Philippines\, Batch '81 also 
 functions as allegory\, posing a boldfaced critique of the Marcos regime a
 nd the culture of fear\, oppression and reprisal it enforced under Martial
  Law. With its direct and confrontational style and themes that remain ter
 rifyingly relevant\, Batch '81 delivers a hard-hitting example of the poli
 tical potency of genre cinema and provides a bracing showcase for Mike De 
 Leon as one of the Philippines' most significant political filmmakers. Tic
